Biblical Femininity

There is true beauty when it comes to the characteristics and attributes of a woman after God’s own heart. Many people today have lost sight of that beauty along with the set apart path that God created for womanhood. But, through taking time to unpack the raw and authentic design that God hand crafted for femininity, we see just how perfect His design is.

Installment #1 - “True Femininity”

Being a Christian female is so much more than a God given gender, it is getting to exhibit Biblical femininity in the world around us. Nevertheless, it is clear that God did not create one gender to be better than the other in the kingdom of Heaven as seen in Galatians 3:26-29.

Nowadays women are quick to complain that men do not respect or value the honor and purity of women. However, why would they see that as important when women aren’t setting the example by protecting the honor and purity in our own lives? God has entrusted us as women to protect the sacred things He has given us, such as our femininity.

Proverbs 31:25 NKJV

“Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come”

Proverbs 31 is God’s description of a virtuous wife. It contains many qualities Christian women aspire to have. But are we clothed in strength and honor? It seems everywhere you look women are the opposite of that. In modern femininity all of that honor is thrown into the wind because women present themselves as weak, desperate, and unguarded. It has become a normality that women throw themselves at men, seeking love, attention, and approval. Women dress in “whatever makes them feel beautiful and comfortable” even if it is highly provocative. Then we lose the beauty of feminine dignity. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 shows how we are encouraged to dress modestly and with decency. Modesty is not describing the clothing, but rather an attitude that should accompany the clothing. Being modest is a way of putting others above ourselves.

Before I go any further we need to define two key terms, honor and purity. First off, purity is gained through maintaining the commitment to Jesus Christ because of our love and devotion to him. Next, when I talk about honor it is more than just respect. It is recognizing importance and value.

God designed us to execute strength and honor. If we want men to respect feminine honor, we have to start with protecting our own. Keeping in mind though, this does not mean that men are not responsible for their own actions. Men are called by God to keep their thoughts and behaviors pure.

A strong godly woman is one who guards her heart, exemplifies her feminine dignity, and does not compromise her standards no matter how men choose to behave. When we place purity above the social pressures of this world we are then able to inspire the men around us to a higher standard of honor. A true godly man will not try to take a woman's purity, but would give his life to protect it.

God did not expect us to know how to do this all on our own. He gave us many examples of godly women in the Bible for us to follow. Ruth is an excellent example of this. She returned with Naomi to serve Naomi’s community. Ruth could have chosen to go after other men but instead chose to be a source of redemption for Naomi’s family line. Ruth set aside her personal desires to serve Namoi and Naomi’s God. This provided Ruth with the strength and honor that Boaz admired in her. Boaz was moved to action through her humble, patient, and virtuous example.

Contrary to what many women believe today, our lives are not about us. We are not here on this earth to spend our lives pursuing our personal pleasures and happiness, but we are here for the glory of God.

Biblical femininity is not about showing off the glory of women, but showing off the glory of God who created us.
